The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, and others by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The party described the ruling as a strong affirmation of internal discipline, constitutional order, and party supremacy within the PDP.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Edo State PDP Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, the party said the judgment was more than a routine legal decision, noting that it reinforced the authority of the party’s constitution and its leadership structures.
According to the statement, “This judgment is not merely a procedural affirmation of an internal disciplinary action. It is a profound vindication of party supremacy, institutional discipline and the rule of law within the PDP.”
The Edo PDP stated that by affirming the powers of the National Working Committee to enforce the provisions of the party’s constitution, the Court of Appeal had clearly demonstrated that no member of the party is above its established rules.
Naija News reports that the party noted the ruling reaffirmed what loyal members had consistently maintained regarding the need for discipline and strict adherence to constitutional processes.
“By upholding the authority of the National Working Committee to enforce the provisions of the PDP Constitution, the Court of Appeal has sent a clear message that no individual, no matter how highly placed, can operate above the constitutional framework of the party,” the statement read.
The party further alleged that some individuals had recently attempted to destabilise the PDP from within while relying on court processes to shield their actions.
Osa-Ogbegie said their actions were aimed at creating confusion within the party and weakening legitimate leadership structures.
He said, “Over the past months, certain individuals sought to weaken the party from within while simultaneously attempting to hide behind the judicial process.
“Their strategy was simple: destabilise the party internally, frustrate legitimate leadership structures and create confusion capable of benefiting external political interests.
“Today, that strategy has collapsed under the weight of judicial clarity.”
The Edo PDP congratulated the National Working Committee, the National Chairman, state chairmen, and millions of party members across the country for their loyalty and patience throughout the legal battle.
“We congratulate the National Working Committee, the National Chairman, state chairmen, and the millions of faithful PDP members whose loyalty, discipline and patience have now been vindicated by the courts,” the statement said.
The party also warned those it described as political opportunists and disguised saboteurs against attempting to undermine the PDP from within.
According to the party, the ruling signals the end of impunity within its ranks.
“This ruling is also a warning to political opportunists and disguised saboteurs who believe they can weaken the PDP from within while pretending to act in its interest.
“The era of impunity within the party is over. Discipline, constitutional order and collective responsibility must remain the guiding principles of our great party,” it added.
PDP Positions Itself As Alternative
The Edo PDP said the judgment comes at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, stressing that the country needs a strong opposition to address the challenges facing citizens.
The party criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government over the current economic and security situation in the country.
“More importantly, this judgment strengthens the PDP at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political history when the country desperately needs a strong, organised and principled opposition to rescue our democracy from the incompetence, economic hardship and governance failures that have characterised the APC administration at the federal level.
“While the APC continues to preside over unprecedented inflation, insecurity, collapsing purchasing power and national frustration, the PDP is steadily putting its house in order to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.”
The party urged members nationwide to remain united and committed to rebuilding the PDP into a formidable political platform.
It emphasised that the future of the party must be anchored on strong institutions rather than personal ambitions.
“The message from the Court of Appeal is therefore clear: institutions matter, constitutions matter and discipline matters.
“The PDP will continue to defend its constitutional processes, protect its internal democracy and strengthen its structures in preparation for the enormous responsibility of rescuing Nigeria from the disastrous experiment that the APC government has become.
“We urge all genuine members of the party to remain united, vigilant and committed to the collective rebuilding of the PDP as the most viable political platform for the restoration of competent and people-centred governance in Nigeria.
“The future belongs to disciplined institutions, not to individuals who mistake personal ambition for party leadership.
“The PDP will endure. The PDP will rebuild. And ultimately, the PDP will lead Nigeria again,” the statement concluded.
